Dr. Barakat is 1 of 7 Board Certified Implantologists in the state of Virginia and 1 of 4 Virginian dentists who specializes in The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST ™), a scalpel-free, suture-free procedure for correcting gum recession.

What is gum recession?

Gum recession, also known as gingival recession or receding gums, is a condition that lowers or raises gum tissue so that the roots of teeth are exposed. Recessed gums can be caused by:

  • Gum disease, including gingivitis, periodontitis and advanced periodontitis
  • Brushing with a toothbrush that has hard bristles or brushing and flossing too hard
  • Teeth grinding and clenching
  • Abnormal tooth alignment
  • What are the consequences of receding gums?

When the roots of your teeth are exposed as a result of recessed gums, you may notice that your teeth become more sensitive, especially when your eat or drink something that is hot, cold, sweet or sour. Even chewing can become painful because of exposed dental roots, and you may see that your gums begin to bleed when you brush or floss. In addition, you could be at an increased risk for tooth decay.

How does the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST) work?

Treating gum recession is essential to restoring your oral health. With the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST), Dr. Barakat and Dr. Elgeddawi use a needle to make a small hole in your gum tissue. Then, special instruments are inserted through the hole to gently and carefully loosen gum tissue so that it can be expanded and moved to cover your exposed tooth roots.

Compared to the standard treatment for receding gums that may necessitate tissue grafts, incisions with a scalpel and stitches, there is far less discomfort with the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST). In addition, the recovery time is typically shorter than with traditional treatments.

If you’ve been told that your gums are receding, then contact Mosaic Smiles today to schedule a consultation with Dr. Barakat or Dr. Elgeddawi to discuss the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST). We look forward to helping you achieve greater oral health. Our practice is located in Fairfax, VA, and serves other nearby communities.
