What Is Gum Disease?
Gum disease is an infection of the tissues in the mouth that support the teeth. Caused by the bacteria in plaque, gum disease can destroy oral tissue and damage the bone that surrounds and supports the teeth if it is allowed to go untreated. In addition, gum disease has also been linked to other negative health conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes and stroke, among others.
Symptoms of Gum Disease
If you notice blood mixed in when your toothpaste when you spit into the sink when brushing, you may have gum disease. Bleeding gums is one of the most common early signs of periodontal trouble. Other symptoms of gum disease include:
- Inflamed, tender or bright red gums
- Receding gums
- Loose teeth
- Bad breath, even after brushing
- Visible pus between the teeth and gums
If you notice any of the symptoms listed above, do not hesitate to give us a call to schedule a periodontal screening with Dr. Barakat or Dr Kim.
Gum Disease Treatment Options
As Mosaic Smiles, we provide a range of options to treat gum disease in all of its stages. Dr. Barakat or Dr. Kim will determine which treatment is right for you after carefully examining your gums during a consultation.
Scaling and Root Planing
Scaling and root planing is a non-surgical procedure to remove all plaque, tartar and bacterial toxins from the teeth and tooth roots and prevent future infection. Using special dental tools, your dentist or dental hygienist will perform a deep clean of your gums and smooth out any rough spots on the tooth roots where germs could gather.
Chao Pinhole Technique
The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST ™) is a scalpel-free, suture-free procedure for correcting gum recession that is a more comfortable alternative to standard treatment. The advanced technique avoids the need for tissue grafts, scalpel incisions and stiches. As a result, patients typically experience a shorter recovery time with PST ™ compared to traditional treatments. Dr. Barakat is 1 of only 4 dentists in Virginia who specialize in The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique!
For advanced cases of gum disease, our dentists may recommend antibiotic therapy in addition to scaling and root planing or other periodontal therapy. If you are prescribed antibiotics to help fight oral bacterial infections, be sure to follow your dentist’s instructions and take the full course of medicine. Stopping antibiotic therapy early can raise the risk of bacterial resistance.
Soft Tissue Laser Dentistry Treatment
Soft tissue laser treatment uses the power of a tiny laser beam to remove infected gum tissue and hardened plaque buildup. Many patients find this noninvasive advanced treatment to be significantly more comfortable than traditional periodontal therapy. Periodontal laser therapy can often be completed in just two trips to our office and patients typically recovery faster than with conventional treatment.
