Sedation Dentistry in Fairfax
Do you feel anxious or afraid when faced with an upcoming dental appointment? This is a problem that countless adults struggle with, and it can result in skipped check-ups and delayed treatment. Here at Mosaic Smiles, our Fairfax dental team wants to make sure you receive the care you need to enjoy a beautiful and healthy smile, but we also understand the severity of dental phobia and anxiety. That’s why Dr. Aly Elgeddawi and Dr. Hisham Barakat offer sedation dentistry. This relaxing treatment option can take the edge off your negative emotions, and help you feel truly relaxed here in Fairfax, VA.
Our available sedation methods include:
Nitrous oxide is often the ideal sedation option for patients who experience mild cases of anxiety or discomfort during dental care. Also known as “laughing gas,” we’ll administer nitrous oxide to you through a nasal mask, and within minutes, you should feel much more relaxed and at ease. Better yet, the process wears off fast after the procedure is over, allowing you to drive yourself home or return to work that very same day – no downtime required.
Oral Conscious Sedation
We recommend oral conscious sedation for patients with moderate to severe dental phobia. The process is as simple as taking a pill, and like the name suggests, you won’t be unconscious for the procedure. Instead, you’ll enter a deep state of comfort and relaxation. You’ll be able to respond to commands from our team members during the procedure, and the calming effects are so great that many patients don’t even remember their visit once it’s over. You will need a family member or friend to bring you both to and from your appointment.
IV sedation offers patients an effect that’s similar to oral conscious sedation, but it has some unique, valuable benefits. The medication is delivered intravenously, and the dosage can be adjusted if necessary during your procedure to ensure the highest level of comfort. Additionally, patients experience an amnesic effect afterwards frequently forgetting the entire visit. Like oral conscious sedation, patients undergoing IV sedation will typically remain conscious, but the relaxation effects are long lasting necessitating the help of a trusted friend or family member to drive patients to and from their appointment, as well as keep an eye on them for the rest of the day. By the following morning, you should be back to normal.
